I Hate National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Have you ever hated a movie? I don’t mean dislike… I mean HATE

Like when you hear the theme song, and the hair on the back of your neck stands up???? The characters make you cringe… The plot is so foolish, you can’t even wrap your head around how drunk the writers must have been….

Well…have you??

I have… THIS ONE!!

Just imagine… A newlywed bride, visiting her in-laws for their first Christmas together. When in I walk, and this movie is playing… on every tv!! E-V-E-R-Y TV

As my hair stood on end, I shuddered, attempted a smile, and sat as far away from the main tv as I could

Fast forward ten years…

I now hate the movie even more [who knew that was possible?!]

The in-laws have now condensed the viewing area to their large living room. Know what that means?? LOTS of people, in one room, watching this movie

The room fills with obnoxious laughter, cringy character quotes, all of the husbands wearing the same tacky-Christmas t-shirt, kids running & hiding behind the furniture…

When all of a sudden – what do I see?! Could it be?! The DVD glitched?! And again… And then again?! There it goes!! The movie is OUT OF ORDER!! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO MEEEEEEEE!!!!

All of the men get up to inspect… And, yes – of course it takes all of the grown men, in matching tacky-Christmas t-shirts, to inspect it. Finally, KP announces the DVD’s untimely death. As I giggle, a sense of relief rushes over me

UNTIL…

…my brother-in-law rushes in with another DVD of the movie

Spares!! They have SPARE movie DVDs!!!!

And do you think they started it at the same place the dead dvd met its untimely death?! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo…. They started it at the beginning!!!!

Fast forward a few more years…

It was KP’s last Christmas

For the first time ever… the TV was off

As the family gathered in the large living room, KP in his bed, you could hear the sniffles, and see the attempt to hold back the tears

We sat in silence

Quietly…Mom Max stood, walked to the TV, and started the movie

At this moment, I sat silently, watching the family grieve, as their patriarch was preparing to leave this world

When all of a sudden… what do I see????

A smile…

Then, a soft giggle…

And before I could process what was happening, the living room erupted with tear-filled laughter, the funniest character quotes I had ever heard, the cutest matching t-shirts on all of the men, kids filled with joy, and most of all… LOVE 💖

Merry Christmas, everyone 🎄
